Back in 2007, I used to run an outbound dialler for one of the UK’s mobile networks. In fact, back in 2001, I was on a dialler, making cold outbound calls, selling personal loans. So I’ve seen what it’s like at the coal face, as well as the metrics behind the scenes.
But today is a much different world. We’re always connected. And while that naturally has HUGE benefits, and has contributed to UK and Global economy growth in the last 20 years; it has, most definitely, become…noisy.
The topic of lead gen / cold outbound / filling the funnel etc, has been brought up almost daily with me for the last 2 weeks.
Which got me thinking…
If your product or service DOESN’T have a PLG GTM motion, (and thus has an SLG one), how do you stand out? How do you stand above the noise? How do you gain market awareness and brand equity to allow your outreach to land?
I don’t believe you can.
I recently saw a report one of my client’s vendor’s sent us with a summary of their outbound activities on behalf of the business. And it was dire. Single figure meetings booked (not even SQL’s) for a 4 figure monthly retainer.
You have to put the effort in, go the extra mile, show up (in ALL senses of the word), and be authentic.
